confirmation
Strengthened by the Holy Spirit for a Life of Discipleship.
Confirmation perfects Baptism by sealing us with “the gift of the Holy Spirit” and strengthening us to witness to Christ in the Church and the world. Prefigured in Isaiah’s sevenfold Spirit (Is 11:2) and fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4), the apostles conferred this gift by prayer, laying on of hands, and anointing. Through the sacred chrism and the bishop’s hand, we receive an indelible character, deeper filial adoption, a fuller outpouring of the Spirit’s gifts, and a renewed call to mission. The Church teaches that Confirmation “more perfectly binds the faithful to the Church” and equips them to spread and defend the faith (Lumen Gentium 11). As St. Ambrose exhorts the newly confirmed: “Remember that you have received the spiritual seal… and the Spirit of wisdom and understanding” (De Mysteriis 7.42).
The Sacrament of Confirmation completes Baptism and strengthens the baptized with the fullness of the Holy Spirit, sealing them more firmly to Christ and His Church. Through Confirmation, candidates are empowered to live out their faith as mature disciples, bearing witness to Christ through their words and actions.
At St. Michael’s, Confirmation preparation is offered for eligible youth and adults who desire to deepen their commitment to the Catholic faith. Candidates must be registered parishioners of St. Michael’s and participate in the required Confirmation preparation program prior to receiving the sacrament. Preparation includes catechesis, prayer, participation in parish life, and opportunities for service, all designed to help candidates better understand the gifts of the Holy Spirit and their call to active discipleship.
Confirmation sponsors play an important role in the faith journey of the candidate by offering prayerful support and serving as role models of Catholic living. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church and are required to complete a Self-Certification Sponsor Form, available through the Parish Office.
Confirmation is celebrated annually at a scheduled time determined by the Diocese. Specific dates, preparation timelines, and program requirements are communicated during the preparation process.
