Baptism
In Baptism, we are born anew in Christ and called to live as His disciples.
Baptism is the Church’s “gateway” sacrament, the new birth by which we are freed from sin, made children of the Father, configured to Christ’s death and resurrection, and incorporated into His Body, the Church. Instituted by the Lord, saying “Go… baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19), and taught as necessary in some way for salvation, Baptism uses water and the Trinitarian Name to wash, anoint, and seal the believer with an indelible character. The Fathers loved to preach its splendor: St. Cyril of Jerusalem explains how the baptized “put on Christ” (cf. Gal 3:27; Mystagogical Catecheses), and St. Augustine rejoices that through this sacrament we become members of Christ and citizens of His City (cf. Sermons; CCC 1267–1270). In Baptism, faith is professed, the Spirit is given, and a lifelong vocation to holiness begins.
At St. Michael’s, the Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 PM. Parents requesting Baptism for their child must be registered parishioners of St. Michael’s and are required to attend a Baptism Preparation class prior to scheduling the sacrament. These preparation sessions are designed to help parents better understand the meaning of Baptism, their role in nurturing their child’s faith, and the responsibilities they accept in raising their child in the Catholic Church. Baptism Preparation classes are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall.
Godparents play an important role in the life of the baptized, serving as witnesses to the faith and partners in supporting the child’s spiritual growth. At least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church and must complete a Self-Certification Sponsor Form, available through the Parish Office.
To begin the Baptism process or to register for a preparation class, parents are asked to contact:
