WHAT IS TITHING?
Tithing is the practice of giving one-tenth of one's income or possessions to one's leader. In Judaism, that leader was God. The first tithe recorded in the Bible was given by Abraham to Melchizedek, king of Salem. "....Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything." (Genesis 14:20) The next biblical mention of a tithe is when Jacob made a vow to God, saying, "...of all that you give me I will give you a tenth." (Genesis 28:22)
As we know sometimes it is not possible to give 10 percent of your income The question remains -- how much should Christians give? Each Christian "...should give what he has decided in his own heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7) No set amount or percentage of income is dictated, rather, "...if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have." (2 Corinthians 8:12)
“Be doers of the word and not hearers only…” (James 1:22). What do
you do to live God’s word? Do you share time and talent with your
parish or those in need? Do you support the work of the Church with
its fruits from your own work?
When we include a bequest to the church in our will, we give a gift
that keeps on giving long after we are gone. Celebrate the good
fortune so many of us have enjoyed by adding to your will a bequest
to “St. Michael Church.”
Please enclose a separate check for offerings to Barnabas, Capital
Campaign/Pledge, Special Collections, etc. and place it in the
envelope provided for that donation. Thank you.
STEWARDSHIP IS PUTTING GOD FIRST
Stewardship opportunities and activities abound at St. Michael. One
couple saw the condition of the parish hall and decided that they would
be the Good Stewards and address the need. They took it upon themselves
to organize the pantry, cleaning, painting and decorating the hall. The
hall is beautiful!! God bless all of them for seeing the opportunity and
being good stewards. God is calling all of us to be good stewards. How
will you answer the call?
