Dear Friends:
Since St. Michael Parish was founded in 1872, we have grown from 75 families to almost 1200 families. Much of our growth has come in the last decade, dramatically changing the face of our parish and presenting us with both significant challenges and wonderful opportunities as we look to preserve our past and build our future.
Over the past several months we have conducted a serious study to fashion a plan for the future of our church community. Through the Visioning Process, we sought input from all of you and considered many alternative approaches to address the long-term worship, educational and social needs of our parishioners.
After much thought and prayer, we have decided to move ahead with a three-year plan that will immediately improve our facilities and financial foundation while setting the stage to meet our future needs. The $3 million Capital Campaign will accomplish four objectives:
Complete St. Michael Academy. The addition to the existing school will house 6th, 7th and 8th grade classrooms, a science lab and an art room.
Renovate historic St. Michael Church. We will bring the church up to modern standards and make other improvements to the Fernandina Beach property.
Honor our Diocesan pledge. This campaign will allow us to meet our long-standing obligation to the Diocesan effort to build high schools, support inner city elementary schools and educate seminarians.
Acquire land for the new St. Michael Church. Funds raised during this campaign will allow us to purchase approximately 25 acres near the intersection of SR A1A and CR 107 (Nassauville Road), as well as pay for the design of a new 800-seat church and a parish center.
Every parishioner will be receiving an invitation to attend one of two informational receptions, where you will hear about our plans and have an opportunity to ask questions. I look forward to meeting with you at these gatherings to discuss in person what the Capital Campaign means to St. Michael Parish.
This Capital Campaign is of historic importance. It represents an opportunity for us to pray and grow together as we, in 2004, join with the eternal community of St. Michael and add our generation's contribution to its vitality.
Your commitment through your prayers and financial support is key to our overall success. We have grown together not simply because we love and care for one another, but because we have come to be God's people. We believe that, within our community, Jesus is at work in and through us giving hope and new life to the world.
Please use the enclosed prayer card to join us in daily prayer for our church and school community. Help us in "Preserving Our Past- Building Our Future" to make God's will for St. Michael Parish a reality.
Your in Christ,
Father Brian
